… Mobilities and (Co-)Construction of Identity

self-port-with-wife-and-models-14×14-1981.jpgNew technologies of the self, mobilities and (co-)construction of identity :: Edited by: Fred Dervin & Yasmine Abbas :: Call for Abstracts :: Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by March 15, 2008. Full chapters will be expected to be submitted by September 1, 2008.

The new interpersonal spaces created by web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies seem to correspond to the technologies of the self that Michel Foucault (1988) has addressed in his lectures at the Collège de France at the beginning of the 1980s. These new technologies enable the individual’s self to emerge publicly and to be worked upon with its “disciples”: be they companions in Second Life, readers (for example on a blog) or listeners (Podcasts). Reblogged Liberate Your Avatar

liberate2_425.jpgWith his project Liberate Your Avatar Paul Sermon best known for his telepresence research explored the merge of virtual and real worlds on a public screen. At Urban Screens Manchester 07 he presented the interactive piece on a temporary screen in All Saints Gardens on Oxford Road.

Beforehand Sermon had recreated the actual square in Second Life. Liberate Your Avatar transformed the screen situated in All Saints Gardens into a portal between these two parallel worlds, allowing both ‘first life’ visitors and Second Life avatars to coexist and share the same park bench in a live interactive installation. Reblogged WINDscale

windscale.jpg Despite the increasing availability of megapixels and bandwidth, we have become used to the resolution and detail loss, often due to cheap and lossy image compression techniques. The most interesting content on the net is usually not the official crystal clear streamed video, but some unofficial or plainly pirated one, digitally stolen from other sources through non professional hardware and software combinations and then uploaded on content sharing websites and peer-to-peer networks.

WINDscale is an artwork by Rob Smith that visualizes wind speed in a picture. It uses an anemometer (a tool for measuring wind speed) placed on Jaywick Martello Tower on the Essex Coast (East of England). Continue reading

1,2,3… Avant-Gardes – Art as Contextual Art [es Bilbao]

artfilm.jpg1,2,3… Avant-Gardes – Art as Contextual ArtFilm/Art between Experiment and Archive :: Curators: Lukasz Ronduda, Florian Zeyfang and Leire Vergara :: December 20, 2007 – March 30, 2008 :: sala rekalde, Alameda Recalde 30, Bilbao 48009, Bizkaia (Spain).

1,2,3… Avant-Gardes – Art as Contextual Art is the next stage of an exhibition and research project that explores the “continuous” history of experimentation in film and art and the interaction of both fields. Grounded in the extensive Polish experimental film output of the 1970s, 1,2,3… Avant-Gardes will offer a selection of films mostly produced by Polish artists from that period, whilst including contemporary international artistic proposals that constitute a challenge for the interpretation of the history of experimental cinema.
