Florian Kuhlmann’s Hybrid Spaces

theibuyeverythingevent_small.jpgThe I Buy Everything Event - a hybrid happening by Florian Kuhlmann (aka Lance Kannos): The purpose of The I Buy Everything Event was to connect the digital world of Second Life with the non-digital world - and vice versa - in order to generate an open hybrid space, and extend the tradition of the ‘Happening’ via 21st century communication-technology.

The happening occurred on December 6, 2006, at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and on a prepared piece of land in Second Life. The I Buy Everything Event was a happening around money and sex. The main focus was set on buying and selling virtual artifacts; the erotic part was assumed by ge:schuetz, doing a sex-and-gender performance to reflect on the sexual identity of the participants - in non-digital space. Some of the local participating studio guests had the mission to advertise the event at the meeting places of Second Life to invite the international community to the event.

For 2 hours, the guests where invited to build anything they wanted to build. Lance Kanno promised to buy everything. The only rules the builders had to follow was that the objects had to have certain colors: from 14.00 - 14.30 objects had to be green; from 14.30 - 15.00 objects had to be blue; etc.

The connection between the Cologne audience and the avatars in Second Life was realized with a live video stream from RL to a video wall in SL. Images from both spaces were mixed to form a hybrid space:
