Live Stage: Crossing the Void II [Second Life]

simulate-ed.jpg[Image: Simulate Editions - unique and authenticated virtual art objects by Nathaniel Stern] Crossing the Void II - Chris Ashley, Scott Kildall, Nathaniel Stern, Jon Coffelt, and Claire Keating :: Ten Cubed Gallery, Second Life :: Opening Receptions: January 31, 2008; 7 pm EST (4 pm SLT) and February 1, 2008; 3 pm GMT (7 am SLT).

Artists Scott Kildall and Nathaniel Stern have each been exploring performance and performativity in their archival prints. Kildall restages then remediates iconic performance artworks in Second Life, and Stern straps on a scanner appendage and battery pack, and performs images into existence; both processes produce art objects in the real world. The Food Chain and Dream World of the Organism

2129867610_424cb38c73.jpgThe Food Chain and Dream World of the Organism - by Erik Sjödin - is a landscape of bodies that form an organism which visitors can step into and breath life in. Visitors feed the organism by blowing into an umbilical cord that extends out of its main body. The organism responds by shifting in color, emitting sounds and by growing in size until it eventually rewards its nurturer by opening up a window to its dream world.

The sound scape that surround the installation, the color of the bodies and the rate at which the colors shifts is determined by the growth of the installation and the airflow measured in the tube. Continue reading

Reblogged Signature Event Context

janez_jansa.jpgOn January 28th, 2008, Janez Janša, Janez Janša, and Janez Janša performed Signature Event Context at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, a walking action in the corridors of the Memorial. Each one of them, equipped with a GPS device, covered a different path within the Memorial’s structure this way, together assembling a common signature visible only in the internet. During the performance artists continuously repeated “Jaz sem Janez Janša, Jaz sem Janez Janša, Jaz sem Janez Janša…” (”My name is Janez Janša”). Continue reading

Lunchbox Laboratory

animation-copy.jpgLunchbox Laboratory is a collaboration between Futurefarmers + the Biological Sciences Team, National Renewable Energy Lab. Currently scientists are using algae to produce hydrogen and have discovered that it is a viable renewable energy form, in that, algae is everywhere and it could also be used to produce biodiesel. One of the main hurdles for the research is to find the most productive strains of algae. Since there are potentially millions of strains, this task is monumental. Continue reading

Party Dress @ seamless v.3 [us Boston]

pd0.jpgParty Dress - by Dana Karwas and Karla Karwas - is a roving performance that is part living architecture: part monumental fashion. It functions as a pavilion worn exclusively by five women that seamlessly injects architecture into fashion by using the body as space. The dress begins as a shared, bustled garment that gradually unfolds to create a temporary, inhabitable structure. Each seam, each dress, and each body are interconnected by a single, amorphous surface of flowing material. Continue reading

Reblogged Breaking the News, how to mash-up news through the Net

breakingnews.jpgIn The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge (1979), Lyotard argued that our postmodern age is marked by “incredulity towards grand narratives” (the progress of history, the ability of knowing everything by science, and the possibility of absolute freedom). Lyotard argues that we don’t believe anymore they represent and contain us all. We are alert to difference, diversity, beliefs and desires, and so postmodernity is characterised by an abundance of micronarratives. Continue reading

Digital Artists Handbook

digital.jpgThe Digital Artists Handbook is an up to date, reliable and accessible source of information that introduces you to different tools, resources and ways of working related to digital art.

The goal of the Handbook is to be a signpost, a source of practical information and content that bridges the gap between new users and the platforms and resources that are available, but not always very accessible. The Handbook will be slowly filled with articles written by invited artists and specialists, talking about their tools and ways of working. Some articles are introductions to tools, others are descriptions of methodologies, concepts and technologies. Continue reading
