Participants are now sought for the 1000 Joyce Walks project taking place on June 16th (Bloomsday) 2008. 1000 Joyce Walks is a participatory global intervention which aims to create a day of psychogeographical exploration with 1000 interventions in 24 hours across the globe.

The project uses the Joyce Walks project to remap routes from James Joyce’s Ulysses to any city in the world to be used as the basis of walks which navigate urban space in a new and unexpected way. Continue reading

Berkeley Big Bang 08 :: Big Bang ‘08 is very happy to announce that Philip Rosedale, Creator of Second Life and Founder and Chairman of the Board at Linden Lab, will be giving the plenary talk at Embodiment: A Symposium on New Media and the Body, June 2, presented by the Berkeley Art Museum and the Berkeley Center for New Media. Embodiment is a public discussion and inquiry into the relationship between the human body and new media, and Second Life is an emerging theme of the symposium.

Hubert Dreyfus, Berkeley Professor of Philosophy will deliver the keynote talk on the same day in which he analyzes Second Life from a philosophical perspective, exploring how thinkers such as Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and Heidegger would respond to the virtual embodiment enabled by such systems. Living Light is an exhibition of sensuously engaging electroluminescent and bioluminescent installations. Biological and technological beings of light are used as live sculptural elements and the gallery is transformed into a meditative space.

‘Light Sensitive’ by Diane Willow is a new participatory artwork that engages people in contemplation as an interactive, social experience. The focal phenomenon for contemplation in Light Sensitive is bioluminescence. Within this installation, microscopic bioluminescent algae inhabit a series of interactive, sculptural vessels that contain seawater. Continue reading

Ars Virtua & The CADRE Laboratory for New Media will host a workshop on open source alternatives to the Second Life(TM) grid, in conjunction with the 2nd Biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge.

This two hour workshop provides an overview of open-source, third-party virtual-world server technology based on Second Life(TM), and the opportunities afforded to artists and experimenters who are now able to cheaply host tailored synthetic spaces.

The first hour will be devoted to a brief overview of Second Life and the “OpenMetaverse” initiatives (libsl, opensim, etc.) Bennett Goble of Ars Virtua will discuss features and show demos of the most popular alternatives (OpenSim, OpenLife & realXtend), their qualities, strengths etc. Continue reading

Location aware technologies such as widespread mobile computers and varying location sensors open up a massive range of possibilities for extending game playing into streets, buildings and even the rural landscape. New and extended forms of location-aware games including mobile or pervasive phone games, smart toys, role-playing games as well as Mixed Reality (MR) games all demonstrate promising new forms of game play. Substantial work has also gone into new game concepts, sophisticated technology and viable business models.
