Live Stage: Historicizing a Pen [
Cortland, NY]
Historicizing a Pen by Jane Halloway :: October 16, 2008; 3:00 pm :: Dowd Fine Art Gallery, State University of New York College at Cortland, Dowd Fine Arts Center, Room 162, Cortland, New York.
The pseudonym, Jane Halloway, will present the lecture Historicizing a Pen on the behalf of CarianaCarianne. In her debut, Jane will discuss how she met CarianaCarianne and how becoming a spokesperson has altered her understanding of the duo. In Historicizing a Pen, Jane will discuss the role of naming, the act of drawing, and the task of the color purple.
Since 1999, CarianaCarianne have defined themselves as a collaborative body that comprises two selves - Cariana and Carianne. Instead of being relegated to the fictional world, CarianaCarianne’s work creates a doubled body that actively participates in the real world. Through combining sculpture, drawing, and installation, their works challenge social structures that define self and, at times, their projects go as far as to seek legal representation for the collaborative body. Their approach not only examines the legal limits between reality and fiction, but their work suggests that realism and abstraction are neither antagonistic nor contradictory, but rather are cohesive fields that generate experience in concert.
This performance/artist talk is a Public program of Dowd Fine Art Gallery, in conjunction with the exhibition Purple States by CarianaCarianne. All Dowd Fine Art Gallery Public Programs are free and open to the public.
