Live Stage: The Era of Objects [nl Rotterdam + online]

Blowup: The Era of Objects with Julian Bleecker (Nokia, Near Future Laboratory), Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino (Really Interesting Group), and Anab Jain (Superflux) in an exploration of speculative design :: September 29, 2011; 8:00 -11:00 pm :: V2_, Eendrachtsstraat 10, Rotterdam + streamed live.

We are rapidly entering (and perhaps even have already entered) an era where we are able to print 3D objects at our desks, make and share laser-cut gifts for friends, and use off-the-shelf tools to plug these creations into the web and have them send status updates on our behalf. We have some commonly-held visions of the future, but what could our very wildest dreams (and nightmares) look like, beyond the cliché of the flying car? What answers can we find in speculative design? Our expert guests will explore these questions in collaboration with the audience in a hands-on, “open think-tank” format. Continue reading

Dérive @ Espace (im) média [ca Quebec]

Dérive @ Espace [im] média by François Quévillon :: until September 18, 2011 :: Outdoor interactive projection near the Marché the la Gare, 720 Place de la Gare, Sherbrooke, Quebec J1H 0E9, Canada.

Presented outdoors during Sherbrooke’s Espace [IM] Média festival, Dérive is a networked interactive installation by François Quévillon that invites the public to explore 3D models of urban spaces that are transformed according to environmental data collected in real time on the Web.

This first version of the installation presents 3D point clouds of Orleans (France), New York (USA), Sherbrooke and Montreal (Quebec, Canada) that were realized by the use of photogrammetry and geomatic data. Continue reading

Finitude (Mallee: Time) v01 [au Mildura]

Palimpsest #08 presents Finitude (Mallee: Time) v01 — a new media art/ sculptural/ sound hybrid by Keith Armstrong, et al :: September 10-11, 2011 :: The Ka-Rama Motel, Room 22, Deakin Ave, Mildura, Australia.

Situated on the main drag, The Ka-Rama Motel is just like every other ubiquitous motel that you’ve ever stayed in: all 70s decor, floral linen and mistuned television sets. But this time the darkened room 22 contains a strange structure over the bed: a circular holographic touchscreen that participants can lie underneath on the clean floral sheets, revealing mysterious 3D landscapes and forms via a unique, circular touch sensitive screen, that also magically reveals a complex series of motorised dioramas, turning continuously high above the bed accompanied by 4 channel interactive sound. “Impressing Velocity” by Masaki Fujihata

[Image: Impressing Velocity, 1992-1997] Impressing Velocity by Masaki Fujihata (via):

Fuji-san, the volcano visible from his office, inspired another work by Fujihata. In 1992, he and several friends climbed Japan’s landmark for the Fuji-san project. In a rucksack they carried, for the purpose of acquiring the primary data, a Global Positioning System (GPS) and a laptop computer. Strapped to a frame above the wearer’s head was a video camera. Not surprisingly, the recorded velocity increasingly dwindled as they approached the summit. […] Back in the lab, Fujihata mapped the data to a 3-D dataset of the volcano, and distorted the representation on the basis of the pace of movement. Continue reading

2011 Screengrab New Media Arts Award: Nostalgia

Screengrab 2011: Nostalgia :: December 12, 2011 :: eMerge Media Space, James Cook University, School of Creative Arts, Townsville, Queensland 4811, Australia :: Call for Art — Deadline: July 22, 2011.

Nostalgia runs deep in the network. The clean lines and coded purity of interface culture and consumer electronics belies a deeper yearning for the origins of new media. 8 Bit games, glitch art, stop motion video, audio distortions and retro stylings are cropping up throughout the networked landscape as artists unpack, smudge, melt, data-mosh and retrace their steps back to the early halcyon days of digital media. Tactile, fluid, fuzzy analogue aesthetics are emerging in surprising places as the origins of our streamlined relationship with technology and the world around us is interrogated, encoded and telegraphed into our livings rooms, browsers and pockets. Diorama Panorama: Zoe Beloff Interview

Diorama Panorama: Zoe Beloff Gets Inside Your Brain with 3D Movies and Models in ‘The Somnambulists’ by Tanja Laden, LA Weekly Blogs:

“Using early media like 19th century stereopticon slides, found footage and her own original 3D films, Zoe Beloff is a scavenger who makes quirky, multidimensional pieces of multimedia. She describes herself as a “medium” who speaks through artifacts of the past to create visual commentaries on the psychological implications of technology and civilization. Continue reading

Live Stage: Jon Satrom: Prepared Desktop [us Chicago]

Jon Satrom: Prepared Desktop :: March 26, 2011; 8:00 pm :: Madlener House, 4 West Burton Place, Chicago, Illinois :: FREE – RSVP Required.

LAMPO and the GRAHAM FOUNDATION are pleased to present Jon Satrom and his Prepared Desktop. By inserting Easter eggs, capitalizing on computer customization, and abusing applications, he upgrades conventional computer programs and ordinary operating system elements to a kludgy audio/video instrument.

Tonight, Satrom performs sections of the new work in 3D. His commentary on recent cinematic upgrades? Our attempt to confuse Madlener House with Navy Pier? You decide. Continue reading

ISMAR 2011 on Mixed and Augmented Reality [ch Basel]

The Tenth IEEE International Symposium: ISMAR 2011 – International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality :: October 26-29, 2011 :: Congress Center, Basel, Switzerland :: Call for Papers and Participation — Deadline: May 11/16.

The fields of Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) seek to interactively combine real and virtual objects and environments in 3D. The basic paradigm enables fascinating new types of user interfaces, and is beginning to show significant impact on industry and society. The field is highly interdisciplinary, and MR/AR concepts are applicable to a wide range of applications. ISMAR now invites contributions in two programs: the Science & Technology (S&T) program and a complementary Arts, Media and Humanities (AMH) program. Continue reading
