Come out and see one of the outcomes of our research group! After 10 weeks of talking to collectives from San Diego and Tijuana about collective practice, online public space and social engagement, we would like to share with you a performance at the intersection of the borderlands of Tijuana and San Diego and the virtual environment of Second Life.

This performance engages with the following questions:

- What are the borders of online public space? how do they relate to the borders of our “first life”?
- What are the relationships between borders and prisons? How are these separate but related modern features a part of the infrastructure that separates the global north from the global south?
- How do borders produce gender and how are those dynamics affected by the seeming gender freedom online public space inhabited by avatars? How is gender deviance perceived and discussed in online spaces, in prisons, in borders?
- Is synchronized dancing as fun in second life as it is in first life?

…or join us for the sneak preview live performance in the main auditorium at Atkinson Hall at UCSD, Wednesday, June 4th, at 7pm. Directions at http://atkinsonhall.calit2.net and also in Second Life,
the SLURL will be posted at http://sharingissexy.org/wiki/CollectivePracticeClass

Supported by UCIRA, CRCA, CalIT-2, UCSD Visual Arts Department

The Collective Art Practice Research Group is Jade Lantana, Matthew Riederer, Adelina Tancioco and Angelica Tolentino, facilitated by Micha Cárdenas, C(a)lit2 Researcher, http://bang.calit2.net

“The performance-, theatre- and radio-art group LIGNA (formed 1997) consists of the media theorists and radio artists Ole Frahm, Michael Hüners and Torsten Michaelsen, who work in the FSK (Free Broadcaster Combine), a non-commercial, local radio in Hamburg. LIGNA repeatedly design experimental situations which aim for the transgression of the conventional application of radio technology and the re-actualisation of its inherent, but forgotten or ignored potentials. The action Radioballet took place in the main station of Hamburg and one year later in Leipzig. Both spaces had been recently privatised and subject to control by surveillance cameras and security guards. People who beg, sit on the floor, and express ‘inadequate behaviour’ are usually expelled from these spaces. The Radioballet brought back these excluded gestures. Several hundred people followed the invitation to spread around with small radio devices in their pockets. The participants could act where they wanted: on the platforms, stairs or escalators or in the shopping mall. The ‘ballet’ was synchronised by the instructions that participants received through portable radios: sit down, stand up, hold your hand in a begging motion, turn around, dance and wave good-bye to the departing train of the revolution… The Radioballet was not conceived as a demonstration or assembly (that could have been forbidden by the police) but rather as a ‘Zerstreuung’, a german term that could be translated as dispersion, distraction or distribution. Like ghostly remnants, the excluded gestures haunted and disturbed the surveyed public space during the 90 minutes of the performance and opened it up for uncanny and uncontrollable situation. If the medium of radio is sometimes blamed for the depopulation of the public sphere and keeping its listeners in their homes, LIGNA turned radio reception into a public event.” Jelena Vesic (curator and writer based in Belgrade)

The following discussion, led by Jelena, considers the impact of the networked performance Radioballet and the ethics of collective action, not least with the absence of material and reciprocal relationships limiting expressions of solidarity. It was recorded 14/07/07 with the participants Rael Artel, Anna azar, Karol Sienkiewicz, Margus Tamm, Airi Triisberg and Andreas Trossek, in the workshop on ‘Collectives, Actions, Re-enactments’ held as part of the ‘Exercises on Adhocracy’ camp in Parnu, Estonia…” From Miraculous Mass-communication - Radioballet by LIGNA, Variant issue 31.

The free radio group LIGNA exists since 1997. In several shows and performances they have been investigating the importance of dispersal in radio as well as of the radio. One of the main focuses is to refer to forgotten and remote possibilities of radio use in order to develop new forms of interactive practices (Mental Radio Show). Another emphasis has been placed on the development of concepts and the production of performative audio plays (Labyrinthe und Interferenzen), in order to find out how radio can intervene in public and controlled spaces, so that its public nature reappears in the form of uncontrollable situations (Radioballett: Übung in unnötigem Aufenthalt).

Artists’ groups representing some of the finest examples of 21st century collaborative art practice will participate in a two-day symposium. The symposium will examine artists’ collectives that focus on social, political and environmental issues and those groups’ strategies for engaging individuals and communities. “The artist groups in ‘Anytime, Anyplace’ work to challenge systems of power and accepted strategies typically adopted by young artists,” said Claude Willey, organizer of the symposium (and co-founder of the collective MOISTURE). “These cultural agents are aggressively pushing the boundaries of art, what it should do, what form it should take, and how it must interface with the struggles of our contemporary world. A network of collaborative groups has spread around the globe, exchanging knowledge, entering into conversations, and expanding the range of communication usually associated with art production.”

Keynote Speaker: Grant Kester, critic and art historian, and associate professor of art history at UCSD. A noted author, Kester’s current book project is “The One and the Many: Agency and Identity in Contemporary Collaborative Art.”

Representatives from three art collectives will make presentations to the symposium:

1. Chicago-based Temporary Services, a group of three artists, produces creative exhibitions, events, projects and publications aimed at creating socially dynamic situations and spaces for dialogue. The artists are Brett Bloom, Salem Collo-Julin and Marc Fischer.
2. Futurefarmers, a San Francisco-based inter-disciplinary collective internationally known for a practice that extends across conventional artistic categories.
3. Temporary Travel Office is Ryan Griffis, who teaches new media art at the University of Illinois, with Sarah Ross, an artist whose works focus on myths of health, safety and cleanliness that surface in the physical and visual structures of everyday space.

The final session of the symposium will be a tour with Temporary Travel Office to former 1984 Los Angeles Olympics sites.

The “Anytime, Anyplace” symposium kicks off a week-long Artist In Residence program at the PCC Art Gallery featuring events presented by Futurfarmers including film screenings, lectures by scientists and student-centered workshops and labs.

Ars Virtua artist Thomas Asmuth is spearheading the creation of a Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ) in the online realm of World of Warcraft; December 3, 2007 at 7:00 pm PST (details below).

“Performance art in WoW is not really that big a stretch if you consider the social arena that is already in place in-world. We are interested in experiments of self governance that go beyond the Guild Structure. Is it possible to maintain a small mobile ‘geo’-political faction in WoW? As an experiment in governance … we are proposing Temporary Autonomous Zones (TAZ). We will band together with a nod toward the feudal structure that WoW quotes so often. Can we hold our ‘fiefdom’? Can we protect it from poachers and those who wish not to align with our mobile zone of autonomy?

As part of our mixture of part art practice through gaming and play, the Ars Virtua Guild will be holding a number of sessions to build a team to carry out this experiment and create a film about the experience. We need willing Horde on Demon Soul server to Join Us in the pursuit of Glory! For more information please email thomas.asmuth [at] gmail.com or go to the Ars Virtua guild blog and forum site; there you will find an extensive page on TAZs and our plan to ramp this up. See this too.

Based on the theories of Hakim Bey, the anarchistic writer who wrote about the courageous acts of art making and intervention without arrogance or ceremony. The text is a beautiful description of those who take the chance and create for the sheer thrill of being in it. The idea behind TAZ is to take charge and be in the moment. Coupled with the critical reflections about the romanticisms of neo-medievalism* inherent in the platform and in our suburban communities and lives, I am interested in really engaging the platform and expressing the culture and power structures of the fiefdom.

*I owe a great debt to the writings and work of Eddo Stern, who first brought my attention to Humberto Ecco’s writings on neo-medievalism. Please see Touch of Medieval: Narrative, Magic and Computer Technology in Massively Multiplayer Computer Role-Playing Games.” - Thomas Asmuth

The event will take place on December 3, 2007 at 7:00 pm PST. It is our intention to play in the traditional AV lan party style and invite people local to San Jose to come into the CADRE Lab to join us IRL (In Real Life) or online.

In preparation of this event we are running a series of “office hours” to welcome new players (noobs) and to help acclimate people in preparation for the event. Blizzard makes available a 10 day free trial period to new players so it is possible to download the game, and participate at no cost. This is a great opportunity to join a group of artists in the online sensation that is World of Warcraft, experience the system and make art.

Be aware though, that WoW is divided into two factions across many servers. We will be running help sessions on the “Demon Soul” server for the Horde faction. If you create an alliance character you will not be able to communicate with Ars Virtua helpers. Check our calendar for available hours and feel free to private message the following characters: Cretivcowman, Felonious, Silverlights, Elah, Tookis, MyriamMoore.

Ars Virtua is a new media center and gallery located in the synthetic world of Second Life. It is a new type of space that leverages the tension between 3-D rendered game space and terrestrial reality, between simulated and simulation. Ars Virtua is sponsored by the CADRE Laboratory for New Media.

Bendati / Blindfolded - an open, collective performance :: November 18, 2007; 10 am (check your local time here) :: SculptureCenter, New York, 44-19 Purves Street, Long Island City, NY.

Everyone, all over the world, is invited to take part in the action Bendati/Blindfolded from wherever they happen to be, at the same time. Participants are asked to remain blindfolded for one hour. This is to identify with the state of mind of Luigi, who, for over a year now, has had trouble with his eyesight. He must remain in complete darkness, or keep his eyes closed for long periods of time. Those contributing are free to stay still or move, do something or not, work or rest. Participants are also invited to identify with Luigi’s condition and simply experience the loss of sight for an hour.

After the performance impressions can be posted on http://forgottensculptors.blogspot.com a space where analogies, coincidences, and individual thoughts may appear; where images and voices seen or heard during the action can find an echo.

Bendati / Blindfolded is the last action in a series of events that make up Forgotten Sculptors, a project by Emilio Fantin, Luigi Negro, Giancarlo Norese, Cesare Pietroiusti - produced by SculptureCenter for PERFORMA07. The project began with a series of short email stories; and the second part consisted of a live performance by the four artists with the participation of Joan Jonas and Steve Piccolo, which took place at SculptureCenter on November 3, 2007. For more information about Forgotten Sculptors, please email forgottensculptors [at] sculpture-center.org

About SculptureCenter: Founded by artists in 1928, SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit arts institution dedicated to experimental and innovative developments in contemporary sculpture. SculptureCenter commissions new work and presents exhibits by emerging and established, national and international artists. SculptureCenter is five minutes from Midtown by subway. Please visit the website for details.

Or, if a user prefers, Twine can automatically collect all the Web pages she visited, e-mails she sent and received, and so on. Once Twine has some information, it starts to analyze it and automatically sort it into categories that include the people involved, concepts discussed, and places, organizations, and companies. This way, when a user is searching for something, she can have quick access to related information about it. Twine also uses elements of social networking so that a user has access to information collected by others in her network.
