The Racialization of Labor in World of Warcraft

“Abstract: This article examines the racialization of informational labor in machinima about Chinese player workers in the massively multiplayer online role playing game World of Warcraft. Such fan-produced video content extends the representational space of the game and produces overtly racist narrative space to attach to a narrative that, while carefully avoiding explicit references to racism or racial conflict in our world, is premised upon a racial war in an imaginary world — the World of Azeroth. Upgrade! Östersund-Stockholm: PERFORMANCE & GAME ARTRasmus Albertsen [SE], Nathalie Fougeras [FR], Bendix Freutel [CH] :: January 10, 2009; Exhibition: 11:00 am – 5:00 pm; presentation about machinima and performance in virtual worlds by Rasmus Albertsen: 3:00 pm :: Ahlbergshallen i Östersund, Rådhusgatan 42.

Rasmus Albertsen: “There are three keywords which have fitted my artwork through my art praxis: humour, cut-up and some sort of nostaligia. I am interested in new-media art and I work mainly with video and sound. I have explored this new-media art in a very basic way. In many of my latest work I have been using sampling to a large degree – using sound and video I find in second hand shops or on the web. I edit it and mix the sources together, so it becomes something completely different. I have often been taking the copyright issue very lightly. Another issue I sometimes deal with is gender roles“. From Spring and Autumn to Warring States Period, during nearly 500 years in China, thought was freed, learning was unrestricted. Scholars without official responsibilities, were able to develop their views freely; heterodoxies thus could widely prevail. Men of profound thought and far vision inevitably were moved to make critical inquires into the causes and influences of these great changes, and quite naturally voiced opposition or offered constructive proposal. The project is currently in production in both real and virtual spaces. The film is being shot both as a live action film and as machine generated animation (machinima). So, there are two films in Volavola, both of them with the same screenplay – the first film is being shot using 3-D computer graphics and the virtual worlds and environments of Second Life and the second film is being shot in real life Rome, Italy.

VolaVola is a film about human beings, about emotions becoming inevitably dull, even while we resist surrendering to habit, even as we continue striving for more. At its core the film is about the human desire to keep love alive and preserved from natural decay. Continue reading
