40°, 73°: Works at the Intersection of Art and Ecology

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: For its upcoming public art series entitled 40°, 73°: Works at the Intersection of Art and Ecology, The Canary Project seeks 3 artists to create site-specific works in Brooklyn (40°N, 73°W), that engage the public in experiencing global ecology on a local level. The work should resonate with specific places throughout Brooklyn and the daily lives of the people that live there. The projects will be implemented during a one- to three-week period in late September to early October 2008 and will culminate in a presentation at the Old American Can Factory in Brooklyn. Following the artists’ presentations, a panel consisting of community leaders, arts practitioners, and local ecologists will respond to the work. Continue reading

The DOCAM (Documentation and Conservation of the Media Arts Heritage) Research Alliance and Media@McGill invite submissions of abstracts for the presentation of papers at the inaugural Media in Motion Symposium to be held October 30-31, 2008, at McGill University. The interdisciplinary event aims to bring together scholars, professionals, and graduate students across the sciences, humanities, and social sciences in order to explore the many facets of media art preservation. Joyce Walks Call

Participants are now sought for the 1000 Joyce Walks project taking place on June 16th (Bloomsday) 2008. 1000 Joyce Walks is a participatory global intervention which aims to create a day of psychogeographical exploration with 1000 interventions in 24 hours across the globe.

The project uses the Joyce Walks project to remap routes from James Joyce’s Ulysses to any city in the world to be used as the basis of walks which navigate urban space in a new and unexpected way. Continue reading

Location aware technologies such as widespread mobile computers and varying location sensors open up a massive range of possibilities for extending game playing into streets, buildings and even the rural landscape. New and extended forms of location-aware games including mobile or pervasive phone games, smart toys, role-playing games as well as Mixed Reality (MR) games all demonstrate promising new forms of game play. Substantial work has also gone into new game concepts, sophisticated technology and viable business models. However, research on the methodological issues of studying mobile player experiences, pervasive game activity and ubiquitous interaction has become necessary. Continue reading
