Mobile Gaming and Haptic Screen Cultures

Second Nature :: Issue #2: Mobile Gaming and Haptic Screen Cultures :: Call for Papers — Deadline: December 30, 2008.

This special issue of Second Nature journal aims to stimulate discussion, debate and research into the burgeoning area of mobile gaming, with a particular focus on extending discourses around “screen cultures” into the realm of the haptic. In particular, the issue seeks to counter the notion that our experience of screens (and digital media more generally), is largely “virtual” and disembodied — or at most exclusively audiovisual. From location aware gaming (using GPS) to casual games accessed on the mobile phone, the arena of mobile gaming is becoming increasingly widespread in contemporary culture, dynamically redefining perceptions of mobility, place, play and embodiment. Slow Furl

vivisection2.jpgINTERArChTIVE has commissioned Mette Ramsgard Thomsen (School of Architecture and Design, University of Brighton) and Karin Bech to develop the interactive installation Slow Furl for the Architecture 08 festival in June at Lighthouse in Brighton. The proposal is to make a room size textile installation that acts and reacts on its inhabitation. The installation exists as a soft and pliable skin that lines the Lighthouse space. The skin shifts. As guests enter and move within the foyer, the skin moves imperceptibly at deep timeframes, creating new cavities and spaces, revealing slits and apertures. Continue reading

Slow Messenger

1796800207_d083a8ba35.jpgSlow Messenger Prototype (II) by Near Future Laboratory: This is the second prototype hardware for the Slow Messenger project … (It) uses a small 96 x 64 pixel OLED display by 4D Systems and the idea is that you’d have your “instant” messages displayed over relatively long periods of time, and the more you carried the messaging device with you — the more you held it — the more of the message you would see. If you left the device by itself — thereby not really showing much commitment or affinity to the message — the longer it would take for the message to reveal itself. Continue reading
