[Image: “What a building desires” 2005. Excerpt from Richard Goodwin’s Porosity Research into Public space.] Experimental Arts :: Main Conference and Discussion Forum: August 19-20, 2011 :: National Postgraduate Conference: August 17-18 :: Scientia Building, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia :: Call for Papers — Deadline for Abstracts: April 27.

We have entered the experimental age…Experiments are no longer conducted just in the laboratory. They have become collective experiments that concern each and every one of us.” Bruno Latour, 2004

New Imaging [au Sydney]

New Imaging: Transdisciplinary Strategies for Art Beyond the New Media :: November 5-6, 2010 :: Artspace, 43/51 Cowper Wharf Rd, Sydney, Australia.

A profound shift is occurring in our understanding of postmodern media culture. Since the turn of the millennium the emphasis on mediation as technology and as aesthetic idiom, as opportunity for creative initiatives and for critique, has become increasingly normative and doctrinaire. Mediation and the new media arts have in fact become the new medium of critical and pedagogical discourse: like water is for fish, like culture is for cultural studies, mediation is a concept that is taken for granted now because it is itself the medium in which we think and act, in which we swim. We need a concept that is amphibian, and that can leave its medium. Continue reading

L’artiste en l’œuvre? (The Artist on Display?)

[Image: Bleu Remix by Yann Marussich] [Plastik Art & Science]In Vivo: L’artiste en l’œuvre ? (The Artist on Display?) :: Call for Contributions — Deadline: September 15, 2010.

Art that is created out of the living world (bio-art, body-art, environmental art…) is today commonly directed by a desire that one could define using the prefix: “trans-“. One is of course immediately reminded of the transgenic, and Eduardo KAC’s research, for example, on the genetic marker Lucifrase which he transmits to mice, or his creation, Edunia, a petunia carrying fragments of his own DNA. One is also reminded of transmutation, and the doll’s clothes made out of animal skin cultures by the SymbioticA group. Or of transgression in relation to contemporary ethics, which could apply to the two preceding examples, but also to more performative experiments, such as Blue by Yann Marussich, a performance in which, installed in an airtight box, he sweats blue methylene from every pore of his skin, when the substance is declared dangerous if ingested even by the manufacturer.
