Hi Ethan and Jo. Sorry for not answering this sooner. I'll be around from now on to answer AI questions!

Our gallery hours have changed to Thurs, Fri, Sat noon to six pm. I'm usually there on Saturdays and in my experience a busy Saturday could bring up to 40 people between noon and six. An average day would see 20 people and a slow day maybe 8 or 10.

This is of course throughout the six hour time span. We've never had more then 10 or so visitors at once during galley hours. Many people visit the gallery solo or in groups of 2 or 3.

Opening events are of course a different story. We usually count between 150 and 200 people at openings.

Hope this helps. Any other questions feel free to ask. Thanks,

Lifecrawler is a new service that looks like it will offer residents of the virtual world of Second Life the chance to stream their virtual activities to a Web site, among other things. There’s not a lot of text on the site, so it’s hard to tell exactly how the service will work, but it appears it will offer two components: a window you can drop on your Web site that will stream your SL activities to the Web, and a metrics system that will give you information about visitors to your SL plot of land and what they’ve been getting up to there. All you can do at the moment is sign up for email updates, but it looks like a very interesting service. http://lifecrawler.com/

Nathaniel,

This should be doable. I haven't tried it, but check out the LSL scripting wiki at.
http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LSL_Portal

(1) Attaching clothing, shapes or skins to an avatar, use llAttachToAvatar
* remember that Second Life treats hair, skin textures, etc. the same as clothing,

(2) Requesting data from an HTTP server, use llHTTPRequest

Good luck,

I am not entirely sure if this could be done, I do believe LSL can change what the avatar is wearing which would have a similar effect. I have referred a person who know a bit more about the workings of LSL to help you figure this out.

Hi Ethan,

Sorry this took so long for me to get back to you. At present I do not have good statistics on traffic. I was monitoring it a while ago but my script broke. I know from previous experience that people do pass through the gallery, but that it varies depending on what is showing.

I shall make a point of setting up a counter again this weekend to get some reasonable statistics for you.

Hey all:

I know veryry little about SL scripting, but have some ideas bubbling. Am wondering how possible it is to use scripting to dynamically change an avatar's appearance, whether we can potentially use internet feeds to do so, and if there are any people out there interested in working either with or for me on a project that would require such things? The idea is not 100% formed just yet, so am happy to chat if anyone is interested. Thanks for letting me know! best, nathaniel

Two exterior glass walls provide extensive natural light, and the space can be partitioned by four movable modular wall panels. Visits to the space during gallery hours are encouraged. A floor plan and equipment list is available upon request.

1) What are the dimensions of the piece?
2) What equipment will it require? (AI has DSL Cable, both wireless and ethernet access). Are you able to supply the equipment?
3) Other installation materials?
4) Will anything have to be suspended from the ceiling?
5) How will the piece be delivered to Art Interactive?
6) How will the piece be installed and by whom? How long will the installation take?

1. I read this on the [iDC] list last week. Geoffrey Thomas said:

A class I'm currently taking, Ali Mazalek's Experimental Media, may speak to issue of collaboration. The class is building a single (though multi-segmented) project around the theme of "garden as performance space." The final tangible installation will interact with a Second Life interface created by students in Ken Perlin's class at NYU. Students are divided into working groups based on existing skill sets. These groups roughly break down into the following categories: physical/sculptural forms, hardware (sensors) and software (sensor software and network software)." Write to him (zmaxm at hotmail.com) if you want to know more.

9. DanCoyote Antonelli: http://www.justvirtual.com/index.php/the-organic-beauty-of-hyperformalism or http://www.turbulence.org/blog/archives/003439.html. Franck Ancel says:

"Over the years, more than a few residents have experimented with Second Life as an artistic medium, through sculptures and interactive installations: AngryBeth Shortbread, Arahan Claveau, Nylon Pinkey, Stella Costello, and the Port collective spring immediately to mind. In mid to late 2006, there's seemingly been a mini Renaissance of artists entering the field, many of them established professionals from other media. Among them is Dancoyote Antonelli, a real-life artist who created SL's Musem of Hyperformalism. dancoyote's artwork pushes the boundaries of Second Life, exploring both interactive artwork and live performance, mostespecially with a widely praised performance that combines flying dance animations, music, and particle effects (think Cirque du Soleil but more psychedelic). Many believe Antonelli has created a breakthrought that establishes Second Life as new form for artists; in any case, his works are sure to inspire even more aesthetic milestones in the metaverse. p. 252 "Second Life: the official guide" 2007.
Second Life (SL) is a streaming 3D environment that allows the avatar to move in and among the objects in the "world." To this end nearby objects appear in the open source client or user's view as they are loaded from the remote server. There are basically three types of media in this environment. They are (a) shape based; (b) texture based; and/or (c) script based using Linden Scripting Language (LSL). The shape based objects include everything from architecture to avatar attachments like shoes; texture based entities include images and streaming video; and script based objects interact with the previous two and the world outside SL.

1) Will you work within the existing SL structure or do you plan to create something unique?

2) How will the Ars Virtua component of your project interace with the Turbulence and Art Interactive components?

3) Will the realization or your piece fit into the 2000 m sq of Ars Virtua's main Gallery and within 500 prims?

4) Will you be streaming video or audio into the space? How many streams will you be using, and have you done this before?
