Net_Music_Weekly: Great Fences of Australia
For over 25 years, Jon Rose has been bowing and recording the music of Fences worldwide. Since 2002, he and violinist Hollis Taylor have traveled 25,000 kilometres to map the Great Fences of Australia. They have played and recorded the unique sounds of hundreds of fences in every state and territory, including the well-known ‘Dog Fence’ and ‘Rabbit-Proof Fences’. Taylor recently published Post Impressions: A Travel Book for Tragic Intellectuals which includes a DVD of 40 outback fence performances, color photos, and fence music and birdsong transcriptions. Here’s an excerpt:
A radiophonic version of the project entitled Voices from the Fence was commissioned by the ABC Australia, and a CD complete with a specimen of rusty barbed wire, was produced by Dynamo House (Melbourne). Future plans include building a special fence based on the principles of Just Intonation and the Fibonacci Series. Its construction should take place in Western Australia in 2009/10. It is designed to remain in situ after the initial performances and be powered (Aeolian-style) by the strong winds of the outback.
