Net_Music_Weekly: Vienna Vegetable Orchestra
Founded in 1998, the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra performs on instruments made of fresh vegetables, creating a unique music aesthetic. The Vegetable Orchestra consists of 11 musicians, a sound engineer and a video artist who perform in Europe and Asia. A concert of the Vegetable Orchestra appeals to all the senses; as an encore, the audience is offered fresh vegetable soup.
The Vegetable Orchestra’s second CD, Automate, is a compilation of tracks influenced by the most diverse contemporary electronic music styles. For several months prior to the studio recording, the ensemble composed and arranged the pieces, and most importantly, discovered instruments. Inventions such as a radish-marimba and a water radish were added to such long-standing sound generators as the cuke-o-phon and the carrot recorder. The compositions range from rhythmic house tracks to noise music to dub and glitch pieces. Listen to excerpts:
