Live Stage: Tibor Szemző, Invisible Story [pl Wrocław]

szemzo.jpgTibor Szemző: Invisible Story, an Interactive audio-visual installation :: at the WRO Art Center, Widok Street, Wrocław, Poland :: Vernissage: July 19, 2008, 9:00 pm :: until July 27, 2008.

Invisible Story is a site specific, extensive, interactive installation created especially for WRO Art Center. It uses vintage and contemporary media technologies: a system of 8mm projectors (construction by Meopta from the 1970s), screening looped film sequences is steered by a matrix of ultrasound sensors that controls also the sound and light layers of the installation. The interactive component of the exhibition has been developed at WRO Art Center.

Invisible Story was inspired by educational films developed on 8mm tape in former German Democratic Republic and by poetic texts by Hungarian philosopher Béla Hamvas to which between 1996 and 2000 Szemző had composed a number of pieces (Seven Music Sketches for Mixed Ensemble) released under the same name (The Invisible Story). These compositions create the sound layer of the installation but this time Hamvas’ texts had been translated in Polish, recorded, remixed and incorporated into the original sound structure.

The exhibition is supplemented by archival materials in our Media Library: interviews and recordings of Szemző’s performances.

Tibor Szemző, born in 1955 in Budapest, is a composer, musician, videographer, author of experimental films, installations and performances showcased around the world. His cooperation with WRO has begun at WRO 95 Biennale, where he premiered his composition Tractatus, broadcasted live on Polish TV.

The presentation of Invisible Story at WRO Art Center coincides with the world premiere of Csoma, a multimedia opera by Tibor Szemző, opening the international film festival Era Nowe Horyzonty. Csoma is a modern multimedia work, taking place simultaneously on screen and on stage, it will be premiered on July 17th. A complete retrospective of Szemző’s film works will be also presented during the festival.

Invisible Story was developed during Szemző’s three months residency at the WRO Art Center, starting in May 2008, within the Visegard Artist Residency Program, financed by the Visegrad Fund. We are also thankful for the help of the Hungarian Institute of Culture.
