Live Stage: Jin Hi Kim and Digital Buddha [es Zaragoza]

jin-hi-kim_komungo-_2-copy.jpgComposer Jin Hi Kim will present the European Premiere of her Digital Buddha for electric komungo and video with percussionist Gerry Hemingway at Expo Zaragoza 2008 ::Zaragoza, Spain :: July 28-29 at 7:00 pm :: and on July 30 at Museo do mar de Galicia in Spain.

The work begins with a contemplative hypnotic video Mandala and the ancient 4th century acoustic komungo that is rooted in Buddhist meditation. Digital Buddha gradually moves into a video mix with extraordinary juxtapositions, fast cut swirling images of a deconstructed electric komungo that becomes a reconfigured live performance through contemporary digital technology.

On the world’s only electric komungo, Kim processes komungo sound through a personal computer program, blending acoustic, electrified and altered sounds via MIDI foot pedal control of a custom MAX/MSP program. While staying true to the nature of the instrument, her electric komungo solo performances interweave from old timeless mind to space-age blips. Jin Hi Kim collaborates with Gerry Hemingway with his sound painting on drum set, together they evoke a rhythmic adventures and sound textures.

Location:
Zaragoza is the culminant point in the valley of Ebro, Spain’s most water-bearing river, in an impressive landscape with picturesque villages and very old traditions and popular customs.

It is one of the great monumental towns in Spain. It was founded some 2000 years ago, and Old-Iberians, Romans, Goths and Arabians equally left their heritage. Zaragoza as well includes important buildings of Spanish baroque. Today the town is economically very active, and organizes several important international fairs.
