Live Stage: Sprawl @ Cafe Oto [uk London]

n34345354768_2400.jpgSprawl presents an autumnal evening of string sound experiences with THOMAS GARDNER, BELA EMERSON + MANUELA BARCZEWSKI :: October 16, 2008; 8:00 pm :: Cafe Oto, 18 - 22 Ashwin Street, Dalston, London.

BELA EMERSON: Bela Emerson’s performances using electric cello & analogue effects are spontaneous, intense, and exhilarating. Sounds are looped, take on lives of their own, bounce off each other… the effect, as anyone who’s heard her will testify, is mesmeric. She has performed solo at Supersonic, EXPO, & worldwide Ladyfests, been broadcast on Resonance FM & BBC Radio 3, plus collaborated live with the likes of Tim Exile & Sten Sandell plus film-makers SchMovies & Tereza Buskova. This performance marks the London launch of her new album on BiP_HoP. Also on myspace.

THOMAS GARDNER: Cello and live electronics composer, Thomas specialises in group interactions, interfaces for digital performance, and evolutionary musicology. His work includes the ‘Ouija Board’ - a new form musical instrument, based on the analysis of the shadows of a group of people. He also explores the integration of cellistic technique with speech and lip controls over some of the electroacoustic processes and cello sounds. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=suJ9919MoKU :: http://www.lcc.arts.ac.uk/41660.htm :: http://lccmpbalanced.mediacitizens.com/index.php?siid=4080.

MANUELA BARCZEWSKI: With 85 bpm, an electric guitar, vocals and electronic elements, Manuela Barczewski’s songs simply describe the luxury of melancholy. Her music works like a memory system; it’s a sound archive in which Barczewski captures and processes her observations and experiences on everyday life. In 2006 she met Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka (Fat Cat) in his Studio One in Dusseldorf/Germany where they recorded seven songs. For her live gigs the artist uses a laptop instead of a backing band combined with her voice and electric guitar. http://www.manuelabarczewski.com :: http://www.myspace.com/manuelabarczewski.
