Björk uses reacTable in Summer Tour

According to several recent articles, and even video posts on YouTube, Björk has incorporated the reacTable interface into her “Volta” world tour. [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQwW3dp2FZY[/youtube]This was actually announced on the reacTable site in late April, but only picked up by Wired and other sources more recently. The reacTable, developed by a team under the direction of Dr. Sergi Jordá at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, has been mentioned several times on this blog as it is part of a larger developmental trend for tangible musical interfaces.

Most of the general public rarely sees or is even aware of the development of alternative controllers and musical interfaces, so it is particularly interesting to read some of the comments on the YouTube video showing the reacTable’s use in Björk’s performance.

Fantastic next-gen music-making interface – somewhat similar to Jeff Han’s Multi-touch interface, which imploded all the interaction design mailing lists a few months back – and with some genuine possibilities for the kind of tactile, embodied instrument interfaces I suggested at the end of New Musical Experiences. Third Guthman Musical Instrument Competition

Inventors, composers, creators, and designers are encouraged to submit their musical instrument inventions to the 2011 Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition. The event is hosted by the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology and features a grand prize of $5,000. In total, $10,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the best novel musical instruments. Entries will be accepted through October 1, 2010 via an Online Submission Form and notification of acceptance will be provided November 1, 2010. Continue reading

Visualisation of Live Code by Alex McLean (Goldsmiths), Dave Griffiths (FoAM), Nick Collins (University of Sussex) and Geraint Wiggins (Goldsmiths) — Abstract: In this paper we outline the issues surrounding live coding which is projected for an audience, and in this context, approaches to code visualisation. This includes natural language parsing techniques, using geometrical properties of space in language semantics, representation of execution flow in live coding environments, code as visual data and computer games as live coding environments. We will also touch on the unifying perceptual basis behind symbols, graphics, movement and sound. Continue reading

Interview: Scot Gresham-Lancaster

scott-copy.pngScot Gresham-Lancaster is a composer, performer, instrument builder and educator. He is dedicated to research and performance using the expanding capabilities of computer networks for musical and cross discipline expression. He studied with Philip Ianni, Roy Harris, Darius Milhaud, John Chowning, Robert Ashley, Terry Riley, “Blue” Gene Tyranny and Jack Jarret, among others. Gresham-Lancaster has been a composer in residence at Mills College and he has been developing new families of controllers at STEIM, Amsterdam. He has toured and recorded as a member of the HUB and has performed the music of Alvin Curran, Pauline Oliveros, John Zorn, and John Cage, under their direction.
