Individual interpretations or variations on the theme are encouraged: Ecology: Water, Air, Sound, but should be realized with sound as the primary component.

All submitted works must respond in some way to the theme Ecology: Water, Air, Sound in order to be considered for 2008 NAISA programming.

1) Radio Art (for Deep Wireless)

Works submitted to this category must be less than 60 minutes in duration. Special consideration will be given to 1 minute radio art pieces for broadcast as well as 1 page proposals for collaboration on translocal broadcast performances.

Pieces will be selected for broadcast within Canada and on several international radio stations in May 2008 as part of the Deep Wireless festival of radio and transmission art.

Both Canadian and International radio art submissions will be considered for inclusion in the following:

-The Deep Wireless 6 radio art compilation CD
-The Radio Art Interventions (1 minute pieces played guerilla-style on radio stations during the Deep Wireless festival)
-The Radio Art Salon - a listening gallery of radio art works exhibited for the month of May.

Laser Sound Performance (LSP] by Edwin van der Heide at Sonar2008.

On June 19, 20 and 21, Edwin van der Heide presented his “LSP”, a performance where image and sound play equally important roles. Sound / video combinations often reduce the spatial perception of sound because of the two-dimensional nature of the image. The performance “LSP” used audio controlled lasers to create a three-dimensional environment that totally immerses the audience and allows for a constant change of perspective. Image and sound originate from the same real-time computer generated sine wave composition. “LSP” represents a system of direct equivalence of image and sound, where frequency ratios in sound, de-tuning and phase shifts have their direct visual counterparts.

In 1815 Nathaniel Bowditch described a way to produce visual patterns by using a sine wave for the horizontal movement of a point and another sine wave for the vertical movement of that point. The shape of the patterns depends on the frequency and phase relationship of the sine waves. The patterns are known as Lissajous figures, or Bowditch curves.

“LSP” interprets Bowditch’s work as a possible starting point to develop relationships between sound and image. Since sine waves can also be used to produce pure (audible) tones, it is possible to construct a direct relationship between sound and image. Frequency ratios in sound, de-tuning and phase shifts can have a direct visual counterpart.

Although theoretically all sounds can be seen as sums of multiple sine waves, music in general is often too complex to result in interesting visual patterns. The research of “LSP” focuses on the subject of composing signals that have both a structural musical quality and a time-based structural visual quality. Different relationships between sound and image are used throughout both the performance and the installation form.

Edwin van der Heide studied Sonology at the Royal Conservatory, where he graduated in 1992. He is working as autonomous artist in the field of sound, space and interaction. His current work is hard to define in the traditional terms of music, sound art or media art because he is often working on the edge and the characteristics of the used medium. Over the years the focus of his work has shifted to sound installations, interactive installations and environments. The performance aspect is still present in part of the work but the emphasis has shifted to the content of the environment and less focus on the performer.

• “Planetary Dance,” participatory rhythmic circular dance

And many many other events and performances, including a lecture schedule which includes discussions on Interactive and Participatory Art.

FIGMENT 2008 will also offer a range of offerings by video and film artists sharing both their personal and collective expressions—often influenced by Governors Island— including the documentation of the construction of an elaborate reclaimed wood sculpture and one NY native’s 1979 marriage in the island’s Trinity Church.

Other FIGMENT art installations will incorporate such innovative materials and resources as telescopes, a teepee, 2,000 silver colored flags, and a pair of five-foot tall wooden lips! The majority of sculptures and art pieces are touchable and climbable—resulting in much art that is interactive and child-friendly.

The work of both emerging and established choreographers will be featured as part of the many dance performances taking place throughout the 3-day event. Similarly, FIGMENT 2008 will have a range of performance art offerings, including such original and unusual unions as the merging of creative writing with art and improvisational drama exercises with therapeutic movement, sound, and role-play. In addition, visitors to the island can participate in the creation of pop-trash poetry done karaoke style, Ukrainian body painting, private readings at the “Poetry Brothel,” and the “intrepid” use of cameras to record various urban explorations.

The musical offerings of FIGMENT 2008 are extensive, as well as exceptional in their variety and innovation. They range from boogie and classic rock to futuristic Brooklyn hip-hop to the “healing” sounds of electric keyboards to traditional bawdy German songs about murder, madness and mayhem—to the accompaniment of an organ grinder! Many of the performances are also representative of the collaborative spirit of multiple disciplines working together: a sound installation incorporating restaurant kitchen recordings, live electric flute accompanied by modern dancers, a mix of acoustic and electronic dance music resulting from remixes of Rwandan mass and folktronica.

Finally, humor permeates many of the offerings, as probably best represented by the Celtic vocalist who will be singing her heartfelt songs about love, loss and indigestion.

THE TRANSBORDER BRIDGE FESTIVAL is a 2 days festival which takes place in Ruse (Bulgaria) and Giurgiu (Romania), on the 18th and 19th of July. The festival is part of European Sound Delta, a pan European project focused on sound-art, field recording and live performances.

Just a few hundreds miles away from the Danube delta two major cities Giurgiu (Ghiurghiu)-RO and Ruse (Ruse) - BG are facing each other. They face each other stonily even though they are linked by one of the rare bridges on the eastern part of the Danube. The Festival has been designed as a dialogue between both cities since it will associate Rumanian and Bulgarian artists but also students taking part in a workshop entitled sonic landmarks of the territory in collaboration with EU Space 21 (Ruse-BG), Banlieues d’Europ’Est (Bucarest) and the Elias Canetti House (Ruse-BG). A networked sound installation will be equipped with listening booths and microphones located on either riversides (LE POULPE installation by APO33) – it will be linked to another installation in MONS. The musical selection for the festival will be finalised by Rokolectiv, who organise the Festival of the same name at the Bucarest MNAC. Arena –Ruse’s radio– and MU studio-boat will broadcast the completed creative radio works and will transmit both events via FM waves and the Internet.

The night concerts will take place in the Roman fortress Sexaginta Prista, on the border of the Danube, and the entrance ticket costs a symbolic 1 euro per day. Apart from the live concerts, The Bridge also presents Le Placard headphone festival, audio installations at the Elias Canetti House in Ruse, as well as audio-walks in various venues in Giurgiu and Ruse.

The Bridge Festival is organised by Rokolectiv (Ro), MU (Paris) and Arena Media (BG)

Participants include: Prins Thomas (NO), Mira Calix (UK), Phill Niblock (US), Joachim Montessuis (FR), Katherine Liberovskaya (CA), Chica and The Folder (DE), Minus & Ion, Sillyconductor (RO), Tom Wilson (RO), Alien Pimp (RO), SKVJS (RO), Vali Chincisan (RO), SKVJS (RO), Henning Lundkvist (SWE), Pistamashina (BG), Cosmiq Microbiq (RO), Camil (RO), Julien Ottavi (FR), TÔ (FR), WPMG (FR)

The 8th Annual Third Coast Festival Conference:: October 9 - 11, 2008 :: Evanston, IL (just north of Chicago, along Lake Michigan).

Join us at the elegant Hotel Orrington for two and a half days of listening, discussion and an open sharing of expertise about the art and craft of audio production. This year’s conference includes top-notch presenters offering a bounty of insight into radiomaking, like: - Noah Adams, on ‘the classics’ - Adam Davidson, on ‘how to make good radio when short on time and tape’ - Sara Parker, on the ground-breaking BBC documentaries from the 50’s, the Radio Ballads
- Ken Freedman, on WFMU’s newest web initiative, the Free Music Archive
- Jens Jarisch (Germany), on the “inner sound of the outer world”
- The Kitchen Sisters, on the creative work and people that have inspired them all along

Besides these and other esteemed presenters/sessions, plenty of other special happenings are in store for the Conference, like the Listening Parlor, Gallery of More!, radio therapy, dance parties and of course the annual TCF Awards Ceremony, where winners are on hand to accept their awards as hundreds of colleagues and friends cheer them on.

And (as many of you on this list already know) before all of this even starts AIR (Association for Independents in Radio) is sponsoring a one-day gathering to help producers understand the changing
landscape for audio production as technology bounds ahead: Opening the Gate to Social Media: A One-Day Immersion for Public Radio Producers. (Participation is limited to 30, and registration is
separate from TCF Conference registration.)

There’s only one ingredient missing at this point - and that’s YOU. Have a look at the presenters, sessions and other happenings planned, sign up at your leisure online, and then start banking sleep now! Hope we’ll see you in just three and a half short months. If you have any questions about the Conference or the registration process, just holler. Or send an email.
