Launch 5/1/10 ::

User-driven viral media sites such as YTMND.com have created a form of “internet – native” aesthetics that also seen on sites like deviantart.com, 4chan.org, and many others, that have inspired New Media artists like Marisa Olson, Jon Satron, JonCates and Cory Arcangel to create forms such as “dirt style” and “glitch”. As the YTMND.com site states, a “YTMND” is:

Reblogged Right Here, Right Now – HC Gilje’s Networks of Specificity

Posted by Mitchell Whitelaw on Teeming Void: This essay was commissioned by Hordaland Kunstsenter in Bergen, Norway, to coincide with HC Gilje’s solo exhibition blink (video below). It looks at Gilje’s recent work – which spans audiovisual installation, performance, hardware, and networked forms – through the notion of specificity (developed earlier here).

The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago [us Chicago, IL]

chi.jpgThe Synesthetic Plan of Chicago :: June 1 – October 9, 2009 :: Chicago Cultural Center, 77 E. Randolph Street, Chicago.

2009 is the centenary of the publication of The Plan of Chicago. The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago: A Multi-Sensory Journey Through Chicago and Its Neighborhoods corresponds with the celebration of this historic event. An interactive installation at the Chicago Cultural Center Visitor Information Center (77 E. Randolph Street), The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago is part of the citywide summer tourism initiative, Explore Chicago: Take A Neighborhood Vacation (June 1–September 30). More than 40 artists and organizations have joined in creating this exploration of Chicago through the five senses.

Visitors and locals can experience Chicago imagery, sounds, fragrances, flavors and textures captured in miniature neighborhood scenes such as a mapping of the tastes and recipes of Chinatown, and an exploration of East Garfield Park candy. SPC’s participating artists and organizations have designed installation pieces which invite people to interact with the sensory “artifacts” of Chicago in creative and imaginative ways, and to think about synesthetic connections with things that relate to Chicago. The Synesthetic Plan of Chicago is commissioned by the City of Chicago, and it is co-curated by Annie Heckman and Dan Godston. Continue reading

“A sound spectrum is a representation of a sound…in terms of the amount of vibration at each individual frequency. It is usually presented as a graph of either power or pressure as a function of frequency.

SPECTRUM is a sound and image sculpture utilizing multiple (number to be determined) audio and video channels across both of Diapason’s exhibition spaces. The process at the core of SPECTRUM is the visualization of sound through spectrographic analysis, which breaks up a complex wave into its constituent parts and displays them on a 2 or 3 dimensional grid. These analyses and their corresponding sounds form the basis for several complex, layered compositions. Continue reading
