Blues Speaker [for James Baldwin]

Blues Speaker [for James Baldwin] — by Mendi + Keith Obadike — is a public sound art installation dedicated to writer and public intellectual James Baldwin (1924-1987). For Baldwin sound, music, and the blues in particular were sources of inspiration. The multichannel sound art work meditates on a politics of listening found at the intersection of Baldwinʼs language and the sound worlds invoked in his work. It uses the glass façade of The New School’s University Center as delivery system for the sound, turning the building itself into a speaker. The 12-hour piece is created using slow moving harmonies, melodicized language from Baldwinʼs writings, ambient recordings from the streets of Harlem, and an inventory of sounds contained in Baldwin’s story “Sonnyʼs Blues.”

Hibernaculum : Vortex was inspired by the Polar Vortex experienced in the Northern Hemisphere of the United States during the winter of 2014. Comprised almost entirely of amplitude modulation (AM) radio signals and recordings of the wind captured from a point of high altitude during Hurricane Sandy, the movement within the piece reflects the character of specific recent extreme weather events from the perspective of an individual located at roughly 40° 40’ 58” N 73° 57’ 53’ W. Turbulence Spotlight: “MUPS” by Jhave

jhave.jpgTurbulence Spotlight: MUPS by Jhave:

MUPS (MashUPs) is an online sonic mashup engine specifically designed to allow spoken-word poetry mp3s to interweave simultaneously as if a group of performers were speaking together. MUPS has been seeded with MUPS 1260 audio poems from the PennSound archives; it can play up to 32 streams simultaneously. In spite of the playful tone of the introduction, MUPS is intended as a digital augmentation in the study of prosody. As computational analysis advances it is feasible to foresee cultural heritage archives such as PennSound operating as sites where digital tools permit innovative explorations into the evolution of poetics.
