On Saturday 26 April and Sunday 27 April 2008, the Veenfabriek and the Art History Department of Leiden University organise the Symposium On Sound. This symposium is a gathering of scientists, performers and artists, who will focus on the issue of mutual influence between art and science, more specifically with regard to sound. imposition emerges from translation, a series of pieces which were developed, in turn, from overboard, our first essay in ambient poetics. imposition uses the same texts and procedures as translation. Last fall I posted about espaceSONO, a sound art show at the SAT in Montreal curated by Tobias c. van Veen. Tobias is an old friend who is active as a musician and DJ, curator and critic and in his spare time he plugs away on his Ph.D in communication & philosophy at McGill. I have wanted to interview Tobias about his creative practice for a while, but we have held off having this dialog for several months so we could specifically address his new turbulence-commissioned project, ’til death do us a part. Tobias will be performing this piece and participating in the Programmable Media II symposium in New York City (today) at Pace University.

Greg Smith: Your recently launched turbulence piece ’til death do us a part is decidely lo-tech. Not only is underlying reel-to-reel technology slightly archaic but even your references are coated with a fine layer of dust. Singing Website Wallpaper (2007) — A Web Driven Installation with Wallpaper and Sound by Ursula Endlicher — gives voice to html by re-interpreting code as a musical score and by visualizing the musical scales as printed patterns on wallpaper. While the sound component of the installation is influenced by the actual “flow” of activity on yahoo.com, msn.com and google.com, the wallpaper pattern is inspired by the “frozen” source code from each site translated into a visual set of functionality-related symbols.

The Lament Project - curated by Cindy Bernard, Kathy Brew, Beth Rosenberg, Martha Wilson and Tom Leeser: The curators invited fifty artists from various media to submit a one-minute original sound work that they could describe as a lament, a wail, a moan or a cry. The project grew from a desire to work with a wide variety of interdisciplinary artists to produce a unique online project that could respond to the personal and social anxiety found in today’s contemporary global culture. We thought that the best way Viralnet.net could cut through the corporate media’s commodification of suffering and conflict, would be in a personal and visceral way, using sound.

The lament is one of the world’s oldest musical and poetic forms for expressing sorrow and grief. Continue reading

Shawn Greenlee: Augur - Solo Concert :: April 8, 2008; 8:00 PM :: Grant Recital Hall, 1 Young Orchard Avenue, Providence (behind Orwig Music Bldg., corner of Hope Street and Young Orchard Avenue).

In this concert Greenlee will perform two sets with his drawn sound performance system, Augur. Augur is a system for solo audio performance that uses the action of drawing as a performance gesture in conjunction with methods for generating digital sound from graphic patterns stored within the computer. There are two primary activities: 1) The live action of drawing sensed and mapped to signal processing, and 2) the manipulation of previously composed graphics as the instructions for sound synthesis. Soundtoys Remixed, the title of the performance that Mackern will offer to the MADRE audience, will deal with Net surfing and (real-time) remix of 40 of his soundtoys developed between 1997 and 2007. Mackernian visions will flow through the (real-time) projection on three different screens, while the surrounding sounds will hold the audience in a synesthetic embrace that will shake new reflections about the increasingly more hybrid nature of the reality we face everyday.
