"WITCHin flux" by Mark Cooley

witch.jpgWITCHin flux — by Mark Cooley — is an experimental remix of Yoko Ono’s 2007 release Yes, I’m a Witch and an attempt to apply classic Fluxus concerns to the context of an entirely hip yet somewhat conservatively staged reinterpretive retrospective of Yoko Ono’s musical works. Moving away from typical remix theory that re-authorizes the internal content of a piece the goal here is to deconstruct the structural constraints of the album / cd form itself and to recast some of the constants of that essentially analog form to the concepts of variability and random access apparent in Fluxus works and common to digital culture.

Once launched, WITCHin flux plays continuously while randomly accessing and remixing samples from Yoko Ono’s Yes, I’m a Witch. Technical requirements - high-speed connection, flash player installed.

Interview: Golan Levin

307275574_f679e27c5d_m.jpgGolan Levin is an artist/engineer interested in the exploration of new modes of reactive expression. His work focuses on the design of systems for the creation, manipulation and performance of simultaneous image and sound, as part of a more general inquiry into formal languages of interactivity, and of nonverbal communications protocols in cybernetic systems. Through performances, digital artifacts, and virtual environments, Levin applies creative twists to digital technologies that highlight our relationship with machines, make visible our ways of interacting with each other, and explore the intersection of abstract communication and interactivity. Presently he is Associate Professor of Electronic Art at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. Continue reading

Agent Radio

1311press1.jpg

Automatic, Ongoing Soundscape

Agent Radio is an automatic radio station built around a computer with a broadband internet connection. The algorithm which runs the station downloads random sound files from the internet, and mixes them into an ongoing soundscape.

Agent Radio is one of the main projects taking place in the Department of Random Radio of the Institute of Artificial Art Amsterdam. The IAAA promotes the establishment of dedicated radio stations for the diffusion of sound-environments created by algorithmic music, physical processes, industrial machinery, randomly selected audio-documents, and arbitrarily sampled live sound.
